My husband and I wanted to upgrade our super basic thermostat to a smart one. When I put "smart
thermostat" in the google search, results came up for free thermostats purchased through our heating and energy company. We went straight to their site to see the options they had. The google nest thermostat with instant rebates was zero dollars plus tax. Since our old thermostat was kind of boxy, we purchased a matching backplate for $14.
Since we don't have a C wire, we converted our G wire into a C wire, which saved us $700. What that means is that we can't turn the house fan on without heating or air conditioning on at the same time. That's fine with us, as we never use the fan function solo. So at the end of the day we got a Google Nest thermostat and Backplate total of $22.50. I'm so happy we upgraded, as we can now control our heating and cooling functions with our phone. If we're on vacation and it gets super warm out, we can put the ac on for our cats. Same with heat. It was a great investment.
If you're interested in upgrading to a smart thermostat, check with your local energy company first to see if they have any deals in their marketplace. A google nest thermostat goes for $129.99 on googles website, so you definitely want to cash in on any rebates your energy company may be supplying you.
